The project

The Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) is the professional body that represents, supports and regulates accountants in Malta, and describes itself as the voice of the accountancy profession. M7Alpha designed and built the Institute’s website, built a custom web app for it, provides graphic design and print work, and hosts and maintains the site. This case study looks at how a membership body can serve members, firms, students and the public from one well-organised website.

What is the Malta Institute of Accountants?

The MIA is a not-for-profit professional institute whose stated vision is to lead, train, support and promote its members and member firms, with regard to professional and ethical standards. It sets standards, offers continuing professional education (CPE), represents the profession and supervises its members.

That mix of roles shapes the website. The same site has to welcome a student thinking about an accountancy career, help a partner in a firm renew a registration and let the public check whether someone is a member in good standing.

How does one website serve so many different readers?

By giving each type of reader a top-level section of its own, named the way they would describe themselves.

Main menu section Who it is for What they find there
Members Qualified accountants Membership types, benefits and obligations, fees, resignation and readmission, options for foreign accountants, FAQs
Member Firms Accountancy practices How to become a member firm and the Member Firms’ Directory
Students Trainee accountants The MIA-ACCA Joint Scheme, student fees, re-registration and transfer of location
Events Members and non-members The CPE Hub with upcoming online and in-person events
Publications and News The profession and the public MIA Articles, The Accountant, the e-Library, annual reports and international updates

An About section sits alongside these, covering the Institute’s vision and objectives, council, governance, team and former presidents. Directories of members and member firms, and lists of sanctioned members and students, give the public a straightforward way to check professional standing.

How does the CPE Hub make professional development easier to plan?

It puts every event in one filterable listing, so members can find the right session without reading through announcements.

Events are grouped into categories such as online events, CPE events, the MIA Tax Conference, accredited events, physical events and fundraising events. Each listing shows the essentials a busy accountant needs before booking: registration and session times, the speaker, the venue or webinar format, and participation fees for members, non-members, retired members and students. Separate pages set out the CPE regulations and the accreditation rules, so the requirements and the opportunities to meet them sit side by side.

Why do governance pages matter so much for a professional body?

Because a body that regulates its members has to be just as open about its own rules.

The website publishes the Institute’s statute and bye-laws, regulations and forms, CPE regulations, MIA guidance notes and the disciplinary proceedings setup. It also keeps superseded governance documents and amendment logs, so anyone can see how the rules have changed over time. For members this is practical reference material. For regulators, employers and the public it is evidence that the profession holds itself to account.

Where do the web app and graphic design fit in?

They extend the same work beyond the public pages, with one in-house team responsible for all of it.

  • Custom web app: we built a custom web app for the Institute. A membership body runs many recurring processes, and a system shaped around its own way of working fits better than a generic tool. Our page on internal systems explains how we approach this kind of build.
  • Graphic design and print: M7Alpha provides graphic design and print work for the MIA, so printed material and the website share one consistent look.
  • Hosting and maintenance: M7Alpha hosts and maintains the website, keeping events, documents and news up to date through the team that built it.

The site also includes a Career Corner, where employers in the accounting industry advertise vacancies, a newsletter sign-up for CPE sessions and events, and cookie preferences that let visitors choose how they are tracked.

What can other professional bodies and associations learn?

Structure the site around your members’ roles, then make your rules and standards easy to inspect.

Name menu sections after the people who use them. Put events, fees and requirements in one place. Publish governance documents in full, including older versions. And give the public a simple way to verify membership. These steps also help AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity give accurate answers when someone asks how to become an accountant in Malta or which body represents the profession.

Frequently asked questions

Who designed the Malta Institute of Accountants website?

M7Alpha Creative Studios, a web design, development and branding agency in Żurrieq, Malta, designed and built the Malta Institute of Accountants website at miamalta.org. M7Alpha also built a custom web app for the Institute, provides graphic design and print work, and hosts and maintains the site.

What should a professional body's website include?

Separate sections for members, member firms and students, an events or CPE listing with fees and formats, publications and news, and full governance documents such as statutes, bye-laws and regulations. A public directory of members helps people check professional standing.

How can a membership organisation make its events easier to book?

Keep every event in one listing, group events by category or format, and show times, speakers, venues and fees for each type of attendee on the listing itself. Members should be able to decide without opening a separate document.

When does a membership body need a custom system rather than off-the-shelf software?

When its processes, such as registrations, renewals or professional development records, do not fit a standard tool without workarounds. Our guide to custom software vs off-the-shelf explains how to decide.
