How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and AI search

To get your business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants, you need to be easy to identify and well supported by sources the assistant trusts: consistent business details, genuine Google reviews, relevant directory listings, clear service pages and mentions on other websites. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation, but these steps make your business much easier to find, understand and trust. This guide explains how AI assistants choose businesses, what we have seen in our own tests and a step-by-step plan for a Maltese business.
How do AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend?
AI assistants search the web, read a handful of sources they consider reliable and recommend the businesses that appear consistently and positively across them. When a question needs current or local information, tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity usually run a live search rather than relying only on what the model learned during training.
In our own tests in October 2026, when we asked ChatGPT for the best agencies in Malta, it said it relies on “agency listings, verified reviews, local presence”. It opened its answers with businesses from Google Maps, ranked by review rating and number of reviews, and it cited directory sites such as Clutch and DesignRush. When we asked about a specific business by name, it pulled facts from that business’s own website, its LinkedIn page and press coverage.
That points to two separate jobs. The first is getting into the list, which depends mostly on reviews, directories and local presence. The second is making sure that what the assistant says about you is accurate, which depends on your own website, LinkedIn and coverage elsewhere.
Why does entity clarity matter?
AI assistants need to be confident that every mention of your business refers to the same company, so your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere. Search engines and AI tools treat your business as an “entity”, and inconsistent details make that entity harder to recognise.
This is a particular issue in Malta. Locality names appear in Maltese and English, and with or without Maltese characters, such as Żurrieq or Zurrieq, and San Ġiljan or St Julian’s. Many businesses also trade under a name that differs from the company name registered with the Malta Business Registry.
- Choose one exact version of your business name, address and main phone number.
- Use it in your website footer and contact page, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and social profiles.
- Mention your registered company name once, for example on your contact or about page, so the two names can be connected.
How important are Google Business Profile and reviews?
They are among the most important signals for local recommendations, because in our own tests ChatGPT opened its answers with Google Maps businesses ranked by review rating and count. A complete, active profile with genuine reviews is the foundation of local visibility, whether people search on Google or ask an assistant.
- Claim and verify your profile, and choose the most accurate primary category.
- Add your services, opening hours, service area, photos and a factual description.
- Ask every satisfied client for a review soon after a successful job, and send a direct link to make it easy.
- Reply to reviews, including critical ones, politely and specifically.
Never buy reviews or write them yourself. Fake reviews breach Google’s policies and EU consumer protection rules. It is also worth completing Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, since Copilot draws on Bing and many iPhone users rely on Apple Maps.
Which directory listings should you have?
You should be listed on the directories that appear when people search for your service in Malta, because AI assistants often cite those same sites. In our own tests, ChatGPT cited Clutch and DesignRush when recommending agencies, but the right directories depend on your sector.
To find yours, search Google for your main service plus “Malta” and note which directories appear on the first page. Then ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the same question and note which sources they cite. A hotel or restaurant will see different sites from a law firm or a builder, and those are the ones to prioritise.
Complete each listing fully, with the same details as your website, a clear description of your services and, where the platform allows it, reviews from real clients. A half-finished listing with an old phone number can do more harm than having no listing at all.
What makes a service page easy for AI to quote?
A service page is easy to quote when it answers the customer’s question in its first two sentences and then supports that answer with specific facts. AI assistants look for clear, self-contained passages they can lift into an answer, and vague marketing language gives them nothing to use.
- Create one page per main service, rather than one page listing everything.
- Open with what the service is, who it is for and where you provide it, for example “across Malta and Gozo”.
- Use question-style headings that match what customers actually ask.
- Include concrete details: your process, what is included and what is not.
- Add a short FAQ section to each page.
The same principle applies to products and offers. For Malet Travel, for example, each tour has its own dedicated, search-optimised landing page, so each one can be found and understood on its own.
Does structured data help?
Yes, structured data helps machines read your business facts without guessing, although it supports good content rather than replacing it. Structured data is code, usually in JSON-LD format, that labels information such as your name, address, opening hours and services using the shared schema.org vocabulary.
- Organization or LocalBusiness: your name, logo, address, phone and opening hours.
- Service: what each service is and where you offer it.
- FAQPage and Article: the questions, answers and articles on your site.
- sameAs links: connections to your LinkedIn page, Google Business Profile and other official profiles.
Test your markup with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator. Our own website, m7alpha.com, is built this way, with answer-first content, complete schema.org structured data, an llms.txt file and consistent business details.
Why do third-party mentions and press coverage matter?
Third-party mentions matter because AI assistants give weight to what others say about you, not only to what you say about yourself. In our own tests, press coverage was one of the sources ChatGPT used when describing a specific business.
- News coverage, interviews and opinion pieces in Maltese publications.
- Industry awards and shortlists published on the organiser’s website.
- Member listings of business associations you belong to.
- Case studies or partner pages on suppliers’, partners’ and clients’ websites.
Focus on genuine, relevant coverage rather than volume. One article in a respected local publication that explains what you do is worth more than dozens of low-quality links.
How much does freshness matter?
Freshness matters because assistants that search the web repeat what they find, including outdated details. If your website still lists an old address or a service you no longer offer, an AI tool may pass that on to a customer.
Review your key pages, listings and LinkedIn profile every few months. Add new projects, update team and service information, and publish useful articles that answer real customer questions.
What is a practical step-by-step plan for a Maltese business?
The most practical plan is to fix the details you control first, then your profiles and reviews, then your content and wider reputation, and to test the results every month.
- Fix your details: write down the one correct version of your name, address, phone, email, opening hours and website.
- Update your website: apply those details to the footer and contact page, and add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data.
- Complete your maps profiles: Google Business Profile first, then Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Start a review routine: ask every satisfied client, every time, and reply to every review.
- Audit directories: find the listings that appear for your services in Malta, then claim, complete or correct them.
- Rewrite your main service pages: answer first, one page per service, with FAQs.
- Update LinkedIn: a complete company page and current profiles for key people.
- Earn mentions: share news, projects and expertise with local media, associations and partners.
- Test monthly: ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and record whether you are named and described accurately.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend your business?
No, and you should be cautious of anyone who promises it. AI answers change with the wording of the question, the user’s location and settings, and updates to the underlying models and search sources.
What you can do is improve your odds and make sure that, when you are mentioned, the information is accurate. The same work also strengthens your Google visibility and your credibility with customers who check you out before calling, so it pays off even when an assistant does not name you.
How does M7Alpha help businesses appear in AI search?
M7Alpha’s AEO, GEO and SEO consultancy helps Maltese businesses put these foundations in place: consistent business details, answer-first service pages, structured data and a plan for reviews, listings and mentions. Questions and answers
How long does it take to start appearing in AI recommendations?
There is no fixed timeline. Corrections to your website and listings can be picked up once they are crawled again, while reviews, directory profiles and press coverage build up over months. Testing the same questions each month is the most reliable way to see progress.
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
OpenAI does not publish exactly which sources ChatGPT uses for each answer. In our own tests, though, ChatGPT opened its local recommendations with Google Maps businesses ranked by review rating and number of reviews, so a strong Google Business Profile is worth prioritising.
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
If you want to be recommended, do not block the crawlers that AI search tools use, such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User for Claude, and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. Check your robots.txt file and any bot protection settings at your hosting or CDN provider. You can still choose to block crawlers that are used only for training AI models.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a proposed standard that gives AI tools a plain-text guide to your site and its key pages. It is quick to add and does no harm, but there is little public evidence that major assistants rely on it, so treat it as a small extra rather than a substitute for reviews, listings and clear content.
